GANDHIDHAM: It is a matter of great pleasure for KASEZ family that Kandla SEZ is celebrating its 53rd foundation day. It is one of the seven operational Special Economic Zones (SEZs) in India, run by the Central Govt. and the first of its kind in Asia which was initially set up as a Free Trade zone.
This Zone, which was inaugurated by Late Prime Minister Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri, is situated in the Gulf of Kutch on the West Coast of Gujarat in the close vicinity of Kandla Port and Mundra Port both fully developed all weather ports, It was intended for setting up of units dedicated for export manufacturers and traders. The exports from KASEZ have arisen from Rs.7 lakhs in 1966-67 to more than Rs.4227crores in 2015-16; which is growth of 10.21% over previous year.
Continuing in the same spirit, the export figures of Kandla SEZ by the end of Feb, 2017 has touched Rs. 3910.02 Crores and recorded a growth of 3.5% over the same period in last financial year.
This Zone, has number of warehousing units which also earn valuable foreign exchange. With an additional warehousing zone coming up within SEZ; it is expected to become a warehousing hub.
Major items of export from zone are Chemical & allied products, engineering & metallurgical products, cosmetics/toiletry preparations, pharmaceutical products, food & agro products, woven and knitted readymade garments, made-ups, sewing machine needles and other light engineering goods and plastic items.
To improve the security of the zone, raising of boundary wall height has been taken up. Two new SDF complexes have been inaugurated and the zone is coming up with 1MW solar roof top project and also with a project on Solid Waste Management.
Zone Authority has invested heavily in infrastructure in the form of ready to occupy sheds with fire fighting arrangement, heavy lift etc. All main roads of the zone have been made concrete laiden and new quarters have been made for Customs staff. Zone has excelled in speedy disposal of request of new entrepreneurs & existing units. For this 16 UAC meetings has been held during the year which is highest ever and 23 new licences have been issued. KASEZ is biggest employer in Kutch District with an employment of about 25,500 with 36% being female workers.
