CHENNAI: Kamarajar Port at Ennore is all set to achieve highest volume of handling cars during the current financial year at 2,25,000 automobile units from the multinational automobile firms located at Chennai.

Till March 16 the port situated near Chennai has handled 2,12,000 units.

Auto exports from this port are registering seven per cent growth every year. The port has so far handled export of eleven lakh automobile units since the exclusive berth for handling them was set up in 2010.

The Port has entered into agreement with Nissan Motors and Toyota Kirloskar Motors with volume based rebates to export their cars.

After experiencing congestion at nearby Chennai Port and the sprawling exclusive parking lot facility availalble with Ennore Port, manufacturers of heavy machinery based in Chennai like Komatu, Kobelco and Caterpillar have also started using the Ennore Port.

Curiously the largest Chennai based car manufacturer the South Korean automobile major Hyundai continues to export their cars through the Chennai Port and has entered into a long term agreement with the port. But when it came to Coastal Shipping of cars for the domestic market, even Hyundai shifted to the Ennore Port.

The Ennore Port commenced handling of export and import of automobiles through the dedicated general cargo berth way back in 2010.
