NEW DELHI: Freight traffic on Indian Railways expanded for the fourth consecutive month. The last time volumes expanded for such a long stretch was in 2015. Growth in April 2017 stood at 4.6%.
In the previous three months, freight volumes grew in the range of 0.3-7.7%. The volume growth reflects rising demand for raw materials. Iron ore, cement and raw materials for steel plants registered impressive growth. Container freight, which includes both domestic and export-import services, increased about 9% from a year ago on a tonnage basis.
