We would like to see Bhavani Group emerging as a true Global Logistic player - Mr. K. D. Shetty in a exclusive interview with Daily Shipping Times
How has been your journey at the helm so far in taking Bhavani Group to new heights in span of just Ten years?
The entrepreneurial journey of past ten glorious years at the helm of Bhavani Group has been quite successful though a little challenging one.
The journey that started with merely four people in the year 2007 has now matured with an employee strength in excess of 400 people across India, which is quite fulfilling.
We started as an Empty Container Depot Operator and Transporter with 2 x 40’ trailer in Nhava-Sheva in the year 2007. In 2011, we began to expand our global footprints by venturing into NVOCC (Non Vessel Operating Common Carrier) domain serving markets in the Middle East, Gulf, Far East and South East Asia. In 2014, we obtained CHA license from Visakhapatnam Port and later expanded to other ports like Mangalore, Mumbai, Mundra & Goa aided by an expert team of Customs clearances handling not only Ocean cargo but also Air Cargo too. In 2015, we expanded further in Freight Forwarding business serving across the globe. We are also the proud member of WCA since 2015 that connects logistics organization across the Globe. Apart from this, Bhavani Group is also an expert in Stevedoring and Vessel agency related activity besides being into Vessel Chartering & Brokering and break-bulk business for the past one year. We are also active in trading activity in Africa Region for trading of raw cashews and are planning to have a logistics set up very soon.
As of now we have 9 depots with 100 + Trailers operating from Mumbai, Chennai, Cochin, Tuticorin, Mangalore, Visakhapatnam, Gandhidham, Delhi, and Ludhiana in India coupled with overseas offices at Dubai, Malaysia and Singapore for handling dry containers and our own Reefer units.
Bhavani Shipping has been emerged as very strong player in NVOCC in a span of short time? What was the strategy behind this growth?
After our foray into Depot and Transport, we made a very prudent decision to venture into container domain by starting our NVOCC operations in year 2011. From a humble beginning serving only few ports we now serve most of the Asian markets through wide range of offices not only in India but also through our offices in Dubai, Malaysia, and Africa. The expansion of these new ventures complemented our existing domains thereby enhancing the overall volume growth at Bhavani Group over a period of time.
What started off as our Dry Van (DV) based NVOCC services, expanded to other specialised equipment like Reefers, Flat Racks and Open Tops. Currently the Dry Van fleet of Bhavani Group exceed 3000 containers. Keeping quality & safety consciousness in mind, we regularly impart best training to our employees thereby helping Bhavani Group to emerge as a quality service provider in NVOCC domain and aid further growth momentum in this vertical.
Bhavani Shipping has its own offices in Dubai, Port Kelang. Which are some of the other lucrative regions that you would like to expand globally?
It all depends on the right opportunity clicking at the right time. However Asia and Africa will always be the pinnacle of our interest. In fact recently we have started our own office in Africa for trading in cashew nuts as high quality African cashews currently command a premium from international buyers. We do intend to expand in this area to increase our trading activity from this region. We at Bhavani Group see growth to be inevitable as we put in a lot of hardwork & hence Bhavani Shipping will spread its wings not only domestically but also globally in days to come depending on market condition and right opportunities.
Philanthropy & CSR initiatives are considered very close to your heart? What are the key driving forces behind such CSR activities of Bhavani Group?
“Compassion knows no boundaries. Aid needs to be provided to all without any distinction of race, creed or nationality. We aim to promote educational, medical, economic and social advancements to the community. We encourage respect for other human beings and a willingness to work together to find solutions to community problems”. Many people have lost their faith in the Government, and arguably expect less from them because of previous promises that they have failed to keep. With this failure of the public sector the pressure has greatly increased to those who own businesses and corporations, to take action for their own social actions and do what’s right for the people. Corporate social responsibility (CSR) is gaining more and more importance day by day. Emergence of different marketing innovation demands direct linkage of corporate social responsibility practices with the business corporate strategies.
In the year 2015 March, the Group has recognized its Corporate Social Responsibility and created a CSR wing in the name of “Bhavani Foundation”. Under the banner of Bhavani Foundation, the group is doing many social activities like Blood Donation Camp, General Health Checkup for poor and needy & Health Checkup for the underprivileged.
What is your message to the trade and to the young generation Start Ups that are planning to foray into logistics business to make things easier for traditional players and the Trade?
Behind every company is a great leader. Great leaders know how to define their goals and create a plan to direct their company to achieve those objectives. In order to avoid business failure it is important to protect company’s financial assets. Plan for the future accordingly by thinking ahead of times and plan for the unexpected realities. Invest your marketing funds into a strategy that works for your target market and stay ahead of completion. Apart from these, focus on principles by being progressive and innovative and trusting in your loyal team will go long way in establishing a successful venture.
