V O Chidambaranar Port to treble its cargo handling capacity in the next three years

TUTICORIN : V O Chidambaranar Port has embarked upon a major programe for development of the Inner Harbour which will treble the cargo handling capacity in the next three years the port Chairman S Anantha Chandra Bose said while addressing the celebrations to mark the 71st independence day.

The developments in the inner harbor include construction of new berths and upgradation of the existing ones to take the total cargo handling capacity of the port to 182.30 million tonnes per annum from the present 50.21 million metric tons by 2020-21.

The facilities which the port proposes to construct in the inner harbor will match the ones available in international ports he said. The port is also undertaking a massive program to increase the draft both in the approach channel as well as in the inner harbor at a cost of Rs 3462 crores. The Program will be implemented in phases.

Once the capital dredging is completed the draft in the channel will go up to 16.5 meters from the existing fourteen meters so that big vessels can enter the port. In the case of inner harbor the draft will to go to 15.20 meters from the existing 12.80 meters.

The capacity addition program implemented by the port during last financial year was around 44.94 million tons per annum. The addition was among one of highest achieved by the state owned ports he said.

Independence Day has been celebrated by V.O. Chidambaranar Port Trust in a grand manner at Port’s School ground.

The celebrations to mark the 71st Independence Day of India commenced with the hoisting of the National Flag by Mr S. Anantha Chandra Bose, Chairman, V.O. Chidambaranar Port Trust. Thereafter, he took salute from CISF, Port Fire Service, NCC of Port School children and students of Maritime Training Institute.

In his Independence Day message, the Chairman recalled the struggles and sufferings of the Forefathers and Patriots who had contributed to attain freedom for the Nation and requested all to contribute their mite to take the nation to achieve economic development.

The Chairman also distributed meritorious awards to the Officers and staff of various Departments of the Port, School children, and CISF.
