NEW DELHI : The Port and Dock Workers' federations representing port and dock workers at the Major Ports have deferred their nationwide indefinite strike which was to commence on August 18, following a meeting of their representatives with the Chief Labour Commissioner, Port and Indian Port Association officials.

The tripartite meeting to end the deadlock took place in the National Capital on August 16.

The six major federations of Port and dock workers had last month called for the indefinite strike to protest against the Major Port Authorities Bill, 2016, which was recently placed for consideration before Parliament as a replacement for the Major Port Trusts Act, 1963.

Shipping Ministry officials who participated in the tripartite talks is understood to have  agreed to some of the key demands of the federations  including that service conditions of port and dock workers will be protected.
